Vimla Appadoo, head of Experience at Culture Shift, is one of our speakers at UX London 2023. Ahead of her talk — ‘Designing your design process’ — we had a chat with Vimla.

Here’s what we asked, and what she told us:

What would be your top tip for keeping large organisations on the same page when it comes to their design thinking?

Regular show and tells that reconfirm the process

You are a force for good; driving forward multiple initiatives outside of career roles, and acting as board member, mentor and trustee. How have you held space for self-care over the years?

It’s been a really tough balance, especially since becoming a mother. Carving out time during the day and protecting it is crucial and one of my personal beliefs is that time is universal and therefore you should be able to work and relax at any point as long as the work is getting done.

In the spirit of continuous improvement, what do you think will be the next parts of your design process that you’ll either start to look at or return to? Are there any new things you want to add to your process?

Very much linked to continuous improvement, it’s how we continue to measure and assess features that are launched and how to protect time to improve features that are already launched.

How have you seen the approach to putting together effective design systems change over the past few years?

Absolutely, with more software services available that support the build and development of more mature design systems.

And finally, what are you currently listening to, reading or watching?

I’m reading Who Not How, which is about how success is dependent on finding the right people to support yourself with, not the strategy of how. I’m listening to The Rest Is Politics and Dissect on Spotify.

You can see Vimla speak at UX London 2023, on 22–23 June, at Tobacco Dock, London.
